Humans are fractals in their habits and character. What they do in one place they repeat everywhere and any time. It is the habit of using models that I focus on in this article. The habit of using 4Ps models in marketing, storytelling, in organizations, in creativity and communication.

Let us scan this habit and discover its utility.

4Ps in Marketing

Most readers are familiar with this model and so will only remind the readers of the four P components.

The four Ps are product, price, place, and promotion. They are an example of a “marketing mix” to help marketing people in planning their marketing strategies.

Four Ps and Creativity

These 4Ps of creativity were first introduced in 1961 by Mel Rhodes in his article titled, “An Analysis of Creativity” in which he defined the four Ps as:

  • Person– what are the characteristics and traits of the creative person?
  • Process– what process the creative person used in his creative work?
  • Press– what was the nature of the situation and its context within the creative press (or environment)?
  • Product– what was the quality of the creativity product?

Four Ps of Communication of Change

The four Ps used in communicating the need for change are:

  • Purpose– to answer the question why do we do what we do?
  • Picture– what shall the future picture be like once change is implemented?
  • Plan– the plan for change and how to get there.
  • Part– the question each change agent should as himself is what is my role or part in this change?

The Four Ps Model of Organization

The four Ps used for modeling organizational design for change are

  • People– the importance of involving people in the change process
  • Process– of implementing change
  • Purpose– the importance of having a grand purpose for change, and
  • Performance– and the need to have metrics to gauge the progress of the implementation of change.

The Four Pillars of Storytelling

Telling stories is a skill that we all need in all facets of life. No wonder storytelling has its four Ps as well.

These four pillars are:

  • People– these are about the characters in the story and the desire they have to do something.
  • Places– the desire to be say a renowned writer will reflect in the places where you or the character tends to spend his time. For a promising writer you would find him in book shops, libraries and even reading while on a bus trip.
  • Purpose– this is the why behind our story. The moment our audience or readers must find an answer to the question every one of them asks. What is in it for me?
  • Plot– this is about the structure of the story whether it is 3-acts or four or more.

People and purpose repeat in many of those 4Ps models. The biggest fact in life is people and why we do what we do for them remains very high on our priority list.

You see people carry their habits including that of thinking to many areas of life. Thinking in 4Ps is a habit like many more that people keep on repeating.
